Battlelore: an Epic Battle

The last game session before my holiday departure was a really epic session, both because we was playing Battlelore Epic and also because the temperature in my penthouse was close to boiling point!

Me and Ponz fight against Glauco and Gianluca a fiercy battle
and finally we won without too many difficulties.

Liga (me) and Ponz (on the right) dressed propely for the hig temperatures in the penthouse!

They start the game with an impressive amount of dwarfs units but with few ranged troops and badly placed. They also deploy, just in the middle of the battlefield, a stupid Hill Giant that spent all the time looking the rocks in his lair!

The battle is going really bad for Glauco and Gianluca as you can see in ther faces!

We have a lot of mounted units, few goblins and some good ranged archers really smarty deployed, covering all the center of the battlefield.


Also the Wizard Tower help us to get a lot of mana. In fact we won the battle mostly due to a lucky and smart use of spells, most preventing and slowling Gianluca and Glauco attacks!

è sempre bello giocare in famiglia ma non c'è niente di peggio che venire brutalmente battuto dal proprio fratello!

Ho deciso di giocare "A Complex Web #6" perchè è uno scenario con abbastanza caratteriestiche peculiari. Mio fratello, Ste, è come me un giocatorei di Memoir'44 e così è stato semplice spiegargli le regole del gioco

Hi all is always nice to play in family but there is nothing worse than being beated by your own borther! I decided to play "A complex We - #6" since it has enough peculiar battlelore things. My brother, Ste, was like me a Memoir'44 player so it was easy to intriduce him to the rule.


Sono rimasto piuttosto sorpreso da questo scenario perchè mi sembra troppo facile per i nani ottenere la vittoria. In ogni caso, ecco qua la descrizione della battaglia

I was quite surprised by this scenario since it seems to me too much easy for the dwarfs. Anyway here is the description of the battle.


I fanti nani di Ste hanno preso subito le colline mentre i miei Goblinoidi avanzavano compatti.

Non sono stato in grado di muovere il cetntro della mia armata per un bel po' e cos' la mia cavalleria regolare è rimasta in pratica inutilizzata.
Lo scontro è stato crueneto e quasi interamente sul (mio) lato destro dove i miei Goblinoidi sono stati in grado di bloccare il Ragno Gigante e infliggere qualche ferita. I miei arcieri sono stati fantastici, uccidendo i balestrieri nani e gli altri arceri.

Ste's regular dwarf infantries took the hills while I was advancing compact with my goblinoids. I was unable to move the centre of my armies for a long time and so my regular and heavy cavalry was almost useless. The fight was cruel and most on (my) right side where my goblinoids was able to stop the creature and make some casualities. My archers was great and killed dwarf crossbowmen and enemy archers.


Purtroppo un Doom fatto con usccesso e una Mounted Charge hanno rotto l'equilibrio a favore dell'armata di Ste. I miei fanti regolari e la mia cavallleria sono stati massacrati e la battaglia persa.

Voglio però provare ancora questo scenario, ma la mia prima impressione è che sia leggermente sbilanciato

But a well cast Doom and a Mounted charge break the equilibrium toward Ste's army. My regulars and cavalry was overkilled and the battle was over. I would like to try it again but my first impression was a bit unbalanced.

[Session] Battlelore at home against Glauco

Finalmente ieri sera sono riuscito a giocare a Battlelore con Glauco (nella foto mentre decide con quali incantesimi iniziare la battaglia). Pur essendo anche lui un veterano di Memoir'44 ho preferito introdurlo al gioco con uno scenario semplice: (3) Burgose, Castile. Questa volta ho interpretato il ruolo di Don Liga (Pedro) il Crudele e dei suoi mercenari Goblin!

Yesterday evening I was finally able to play Battlelore against Glauco (in the picture while thinking which spell start the battle). Although he also be a veteran Memoir'44 player I decided to introduce him to the game with a simple scenario: (3) Burgose, Castile. This time I was playing the role of Don Liga (Pedro) the Cruel and his goblinoids mercenaries.

Lo scontro ha avuto un andamento del tutto particolare: per la quasi totalità della battaglia sono stati impegnati gli schieramenti al centro del campo di battaglia, mentre le truppe sui lati sono rimaste quasi inoperose. Le truppe di Glauco (Henry) di Trastàmara sono avanzate compatte al centro sotto un paio di turni di frecce dei miei arceri mentre anche i mie regolari prendevano posizione.

The fight was really peculiar: almost alla the battle was fought in the middle of the battlefield and the units in the sides was almost immobile. Glauco (Henry) of Trastàmara units advanced compact in thre centre under my archers fire; in the meantime my regulars took position.

Lo scontro al centro si accesso quando sono giunte le cavallerie Francesi dal fianco destro ad impattare contro la mia fanteria pesante che ha retto il colpo mietendo vittime. Ormai stremata è stata salvata da un potente sortilegio del mago al mio servizio che l'ha trasportata nelle retrovie, buttando nella mischia un unità regolare di Goblin! Se avessimo dovuto aspettare che quei sudici mercenari si muovessero di loro iniziativa avremmo sicuramente perso lo scontro!

The battle in the middle turn on when the French cavalreis arrived form the right wing to impact against my heavy infantry. Luckly they hold o. Heavily wounded was saved by a Great Portal that bring them in the back putting in the fight a regular goblinoids unit! If I have had to wait that the green mercenaries moved under theyr will the battle was lost for sure!

La mischia si è sviluppata furiosa nella zona centrale. Dalle retrovie sono giunti in supporto anche i cavalca salamandre mentre la mia cavalleria pesante cominciava a farsi strada tra le schiere di fanti per prepararsi all'attacco. Purtroppo i nobili cavalieri non hanno mai raggiunto il fronte stroncati da una palla di fuoco lanciata dal mago al servizio di Glauco di Trastàmara ... devastante!

The fight was furious in the middle. From the back arrived also the Salamander-riders while my heavy cavalry was slowly moving ahead. Unluckly my nobles knights never reached the fight killed by a fireball thrown by Glauco of Trastàmara sorcerer ... devastating attack!

Mentre lo scontro infuriava nella zona centrale gli stregoni non si sono risparmiati supportando con i loro incantesimi i fanti impegnati nella lotta. Devo dire che i verdi mercenari hanno fatto il loro dovere e una volta buttati in mezzo allo schieramento hanno menato fendenti a destra e manca senza risparmiarsi. I mobilissimi cavalca salamandre hanno inseguito ed ucciso le unità ridotte del povero Glauco e la battaglia si è conclusa con il cielo oscurato dalle frecce rese letali da un incantesimo.

During the fight the wizards supported theyr infantries with many spells. I must admit that my green mercenaries done they duty and once in the middle of the battle delivered blows left and right. Salamader riders thanks to theyr great mobility hounded and killed the wounded units of the pour Glauco and the battle ended with the sky darken by my archer arrows helped by some spell.

E' stata una vittoria grandiosa per mie truppe con solo due unità perse e la dimostrazione che, adeguatamente comandati e supportati, anche i mercenari goblin possono avere una loro funzione sul campo di battaglia!

Wednesday at Club TreEmme: Battlelore

Finalmente sono riuscito a giocare a Battlelore. La mia copia mi è arrivata la scorsa settimana e ho dato una rapida lettura delle regole (sono solito giocare a Memoir'44) e finalmente ieri sera è arrivato il momento di combattere!

Io e Jappo ci siamo incontrati in un Club TreEmme desrto (il Mercoledì sera non è una serata di gioco) e abbiamo deciso di giocare il primo scenario Lore: Burgose, Castile.

Io ero Henry e Jappo Don Pedro il Crudele! Abbiamo fatto due battaglie senza scambiarci di lato.
So finally I was able to play Battlelore. I got my copy last week and I go quickly over the rules (I'm used to play Memoir'44 a lot) and so yesterday finally was time to battle!

Me and Jappo meet in an almost empty Club TreEmme (wednesday is not an usual evening of play) and we decided to start with the first lore scenario: Burgose, Castile.

I was Henry and Jappo was Don Pedro the Cruel! We battled two times but without switching sides.

Nella prima battaglia ho vinto 6-4 conquistando la maggior parte delle bandiere sul lato destro dove i mie cavalieri regolari hanno macellato le armate di Jappo e alla fine sono state uccise dalla cavalleria pesante. E' poi bastato ottenere un'altra bandiera sul lato sinistro per vincere la partita.

Nella seconda battaglia Jappo ha giocato davvero meglio mantenedo le truppe compatte sul lato destro; per fortuna ha poi deciso di avanzare con i Goblinoidi in una carica senza speranza al centro dello schieramento, attraversando il fiume. A quel punto è bastato richiamare la mia cavalleria dal lato destro, aiutata dai fanti per macellare i goblinoidi e poi penetrare in profondità nello schieramento di Don Pedro uccidendo anche le tre fanterie centrali. Alla fine ho vinto lo scontro 6 a 0.
In the first battle I won 6-4 getting most of my flags on the right side, where my regular cavalries slaughter Jappo forces and finally was killed by the Don Pedro's heavy knights! Was enough just to take another flag with my archer on the left side to win the game.

The second time Jappo plays really better and remain compact on the right side; luckly he rush his goblinoids in a hopeless charge in the center, crossing the river. I call my regular cavalry from the right side and helped by the infantry I slaughter all the goblinoids and then I rush in the rear of Don Pedro's armies killing also the 3 infantry in the center. Was a 6-0 and a good night for Henry of Trastàmara.

Mi sono davvero divertito in queste prima battaglie a Battlelore. Penso che sia decisamente in buon gioco sufficientemente diverso da Memoir'44 da giustifcarne l'acquisto. In Memoir'44 sono i terreni che giocano un ruolo fondamentale nello sviluppo della strategia mentre qui sono le posizioni relative delle truppe anche perchè di solito i terreni di battaglia sono piuttosto aperti e quasi tutte le unità hanno capacità di movimento superiore rispetto a quelle di Memoir'44.
I really enjoyed this first Battelore battles. I think it is a really good game and enough different from Memoir'44 to justify the purchase. In Memoir'44 are the terrain that play the biggest role in your strategy; here is the position of the other units, becasue usually the fields are quite open and also almost all the units are quicker than in Memoir'44.

Mi sono piaciute molto anche le regole sulla magia perchè aggiungono qualcosa al gioco senza farlo diventare dominato dal caso. Spero di avere presto la possibilità di giocare anche con il Concilio di Guerra e con le Creature in scenari più complessi.

Sono comunque abbastanza sicuro che Battlelore sarà uno dei giochi a cui giocheremo di più al TreEmme nei prossimi mesi.
I really like also the magic becasue it seems to add something without putting the game in a random fest! I hope to have the possibility soon to play also with the War council and the Creatures trying other, more complex, scenarios.

I'm quite sure Battlelore will be one of the most played game in my association in the next months.



Abbiamo deciso di conludere la serata di gioco con una partita al gioco base di Dungeon Twister. Non mi è servito molto tempo per sconfiggere Jappo; sono riuscito a muovere il mio Guerriero vicino al lato di Jappo e stendere il Mago ed il Sacerdote. Prima ho folgorato il Troll con la bacchetta di fireball a dopo è stato facile attaccare ed uccidere sia il Mechanork che la Wall Walker con un attacco combinato. Nel frattempo Jappo è riuscito a salvare il ladro con il tesoro così la partita è finita 5 a 2 per me. Ogni volta che gioco a Dungeon Twister mi diverto un sacco e ritengo che sia davvero il miglior gioco uscito negli utlimi anni.
We decided to conclude the evening of play with a basic Dungeon Twister. It takes me not too long to beat Jappo; I was first able to move my Warrior close to Jappo's exit, slay the Wizard and than the Priest. First blasted the Troll with the fireball and than was easy for my Thief and my Troll in a joined attack kill also the Mechanork and the Wall Walker. In the meantime Jappo was able to save his thief and a Treasure so the game ended 5-2 for me. Every time I play Dungeon Twister I got a great fun and I think it is really the best game in the last years!
